Today has been the first Saturday where the boy & I haven't spent the day house hunting or doing anything house related. So we packed up a rucksack with water bottles and jumped on a train to explore London.
A few weeks back, the lovely Mel from http://www.mediamarmalade.com mentioned a book her boy had got for Xmas, filled with lots of hidden villages around London. Intrigued, I bought a copy & we opened on a random page & headed there. Today we went to Highgate village.
Highgate is on the Northern line so it's fairly easy to get to, just after Camden. The main Highstreet is a 10min walk up hill from the station but it's well worth it.
We explored the shops along the Highstreet, popping into the Bookstore for a quick browse, losing a bit of time in the vintage shops & drooling over the cakes in the tea shop.
It started to get very windy so we popped into The Angel Inn to have some lunch & a sit down - we both chose to have pork & chorizo burgers & chips - cheat day all round!
After lunch we went for another wander, heading down to the cometary in search of the grave Karl Marx, sadly we missed the closing time by 10 mins so peered in through the bars of the fence, as the sun was setting the light was gorgeous on the graves all covered in Ivy, I need to head back & visit during the day.
We walked back up to the Highstreet and headed to one if the tea rooms for a brew and a scone, it was well needed to warm up, however I could have eaten everything in there!
After that it was home time, walking through rows if Edwardian town houses felt like we had stepped back in time before returning to the train station and heading home.
It's nice spending time just exploring the area that we live in, normally we head just to the main 'tourist' areas but we will be heading out more - time to pick another location from the book!
Where else should we explore in London? Xx
